Boat Designing for Newbies

One of the greatest pleasures of owning a boat and sailing is the process of working on and maintaining your boat. Many boat owners wish to take this process another step further in designing and building their own custom boat. No matter your expertise, with the right materials and information, not to mention plenty of time for such an involved hobby, even an amateur can build a wooden boat. However, before beginning such a project, it is very important to establish a solid plan, able to produce a seaworthy vessel, when followed to the letter.

The best boat designs are those that take into consideration the builder’s skill level. When building a boat for the first time, you would be wise to keep your plans as simple as possible and very straightforward. Do not begin with an elaborate design. Once you build some experience and become more comfortable, it is entirely reasonable to attempt to build that boat of which you have always dreamed. However, for a first time build, retain a level of modesty so that you do not end up in over your head and over budget. Furthermore, bear in mind that certain additional amenities can be added once the boat is completed, but initially, you should focus on creating something you can be certain will hold up to the weather conditions it may encounter.

Before you begin, take the time to research some existing designs available both online and in related books. By looking at these plans, you may get a sense, as a builder, of what sort of fundamentals you will need to bear in mind while building your own boat. These plans may become a springboard from which you can design your own plans, and many will provide you with invaluable information on such things as standard dimensions and materials used to achieve the techniques and results you want. Particularly if you have little to no woodworking experience, this sort of research can make the difference between creating your first boat from which to gain enjoyment and use for many years to come, and a hunk of wood in the garage.

Aside from plans available to help teach the basics of designing and building a boat, there are a variety of tutorials and even chat groups run by people with plenty of experience to help a newcomer enter the world of their hobby of choice. Though some classes may require tuition, the knowledge gained from such an experience is often unmatched, and many first time builders will find this to be a worthwhile investment, saving plenty of time and money in the long run. Most chat groups, however, are free to join and entirely painless. Users can join in on member discussions and ask questions about the building process, from anything to ideal wood types to finish and glue.

Once you have taken the time to do your research on boat designing, and you have created a solid plan, you can begin your project. Remember that it is likely to be a slow process, particularly at first, and it is important to not allow yourself to become frustrated, as this may lead to you abandoning your project before it is finished. Make sure that if there are any deadlines you have to take into consideration, that they are generous, and that you do not worry overly much about adhering to them or a specific schedule. By taking your time, you can thoroughly enjoy the process of creating your boat as much as you will enjoy using it upon completion.
